The Management of Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, Lagos said Charity Dazan, a student of the Yaba College of Technology, was brought to the hospital at 1.10am and died at 1.20am. This was contained in a statement made by the Head of the hospital’s Clinical Services, Dr. Olubukola Aseru, in Lagos on Thursday. The statement said the patient arrived in a poor condition on Wednesday with a nurse from the Yaba College of Technology.
According to Dr. Aseru the patient, who was very weak, complained of general body weakness and pain, which she said started on the afternoon of February 2. Dazan was referred from the medical centre of the institution. It said she was very pale, cold and clammy, anxious and gasping. He added: “We commenced emergency care immediately, vital signs done, temperature was 35.5°C. The patient was feeble, respiration gasping, block pressure was undetectable, oxygen therapy was commenced immediately, and blood sample collected, for blood transfusion. Normal Saline 0.9per cent,500mls was set up to run fast, foot of the bed elevated, intravenous hydrocortisone, 100mg given, cardiac massage done, all resuscitative measures carried out proved abortive. The patient stopped breathing at 1:20am (within ten minutes on arrival). The corpse was taken back by the same ambulance that brought her to the hospital. It was unfortunate that the misinformation about sequence of events had caused extra pain to relatives and friends of the lady".
This is so tragic and I feel really terrible for her family. I do not however understand the bit about collecting her blood for a blood transfusion within a few minutes of arriving in the hospital. Not for tests but for a transfusion? SMH While it doesn't really matter who made what error at this point because the poor child cannot be brought back to life, it would be nice to find out what really happened so the family can get closure.
Rest in peace dear Charity Dazan.
Blood samples are usually taken to determine blood types as well as carrying out other diagnostics so determine what the problem is and get the right blood for transfusion if needed.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information. Still very tragic, the way it ended. :(

ReplyDeleteIt is an unforgivable medical blunder, not to collect her blood sample for transfusion...as it is that blood sample taken that wld be used to prepare compatible blood for transfusion for her...so,it was absolutely proper and standard practice for her blood to be taken at that moment...pls verify info,nd do proper research before commenting.
ReplyDeleteGotcha.
