Like a scene out of a horror Hollywood movie, some heavily armed young men stormed the Lekki area of Lagos yesterday. It is said that they came to rob a bank (or two) but one thing was for sure, they left a trail of tears, blood and anguish behind.
If you have ever been robbed at gunpoint or experienced or even witnessed an armed robbery attack before, you would understand that it is an excruciatingly traumatizing ordeal for anyone. I've been through all three so I know this for fact. I felt a chill go down my spine as I read reports of those caught in the fire yesterday and also watched a short video of people fleeing the scene of the attack. Even scarier were tweets from those in the Northern parts of Nigeria saying this incident is mild to what they go through daily in the hands of insurgents up North. It is heartbreaking that nowhere is safe in Nigeria.
Yesterday's incident made me realize even more than before that we are on our own in this country. An eyewitness saw a policeman lying flat in hiding while the robbers shot sporadically. It's a clear case of every man for himself IF any poop hits the proverbial fan. Our security personnel sure took their wee time before arriving at the scene by which time the robbers had fled via a speedboat. It was pretty shocking to read this morning that the state governor claims all securities were diverted to be on standby because the president was in town yesterday hence the delay in getting to the scene. With due respect sir, that just sounds like a whole lot of bollocks to me. How does that even make any sense? So if, for instance, there were more than one robbery attacks at different points in the city of Lagos yesterday, we would have had a higher body count of the dead because our governments (both State and Federal) are clearly unable to protect us as they swore to while taking up their positions.
I have so many questions that require answers to and I believe every concerned Nigerian should be pondering on these issues as well:
* Why did it take so long for the army to be sent to the scene of the robbery?
* Why doesn't our police force have/use choppers?
* Do we also not have armed patrol on the sea?
* Why do our tv stations not have choppers as well?
* How come our security is so lax in Nigeria/Lagos?
*How was it so well planned and coordinated without any intel by our security operatives?
* If there's a terrorist attack in Lagos, would it be the same response time?
* Are we really prepared for a terrorist attack in Lagos?
* Shouldn't we be?
* What sort of investigations are ongoing to apprehend yesterday's criminals?
* Will the dead get justice?
* Will we ever get things right in Nigeria?
Sorry Babe...you wont be getting any answers...thats the country we live in, its the norm..hmmmm
